Bokor Mountain, the centerpiece of the province, rises majestically to an elevation of 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) above sea level. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush forests, rolling hills, and scenic valleys. The climate is generally warm and humid, with two distinct seasons: a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October.
Elephant Mountains RangeBokor Mountain is part of the larger Elephant Mountains range, which stretches across southern Cambodia. This rugged terrain has been shaped by millions of years of geological activity, resulting in a diverse array of flora and fauna.
Preah Monivong Bokor National ParkIn 1993, the Cambodian government established the Bokor National Park, which covers an area of approximately 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres). The park's diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of plant and animal species, including many endangered species. Visitors can explore the park's scenic trails, waterfalls, and viewpoints.
For centuries, Bokor Mountain has held spiritual and cultural significance for the local Khmer people. It was believed to be inhabited by spirits and demons, who were said to roam freely within the mountain's dense forests. In the early 20th century, French colonial authorities discovered the area's natural resources, including iron ore and timber.
French Colonial EraDuring the French colonial period (1863-1953), Bokor Mountain became a major hub for French mining activities. The French established a number of mines, roads, and other infrastructure to support their operations. This marked the beginning of significant human presence in the area, which would eventually lead to the development of a city on the mountain's summit.
Bokor Hill Station / TownIn the 1920s and 1930s, the French built Bokor Hill Station / Town, on the summit of Bokor Mountain. This resort town was designed to cater to European tourists and officials, offering stunning views, luxury accommodations, and access to recreational activities such as hunting and fishing.
Modern Day DevelopmentsToday, Bokor Province is undergoing significant development, with a focus on tourism, mining, and urban planning. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public buildings. Bokor City has been revamped to cater to a new generation of tourists and residents.
