Where the district sits

Kampong Trach is one of the districts of Kampot Province, lying to the east of Kampot town. The old description of this page put it about 20 kilometres from the provincial capital. Treat that as a rough guide and check the route on a map before you set off, since road distance and travel time in rural Cambodia can differ a lot.

The terrain is mixed: forest, low hills and flat farmland. That variety is the main reason people use the district as a base for day trips into the countryside rather than as a stop with one headline attraction.

The waterfall

The best-known natural feature in the older material is a waterfall, described as falling over a series of rocks and fed by another cascade called Kbal. Paths lead through the surrounding forest, and the pool at the foot of the falls is used for swimming.

Flow varies with the season, so a visit in the rainy months will look quite different from one in the dry months.

The 14 communes

The district is divided into fourteen communes. Several share a base name and are split by a direction word: Khang Cheung (north), Khang Tboung (south), Khang Kaeut (east) and Khang Lech (west). That explains why the names look so repetitive on a map.

Expect a slower, more local experience than in Kampot town. Services for visitors are limited, so carry water, cash in small notes and a charged phone with an offline map.

Going by motorbike or hired car with a driver from Kampot is the practical option. Start early, particularly if you plan to walk to the waterfall, and allow time to get back before dark.
